We need institutional reforms - Nii Moi Thompson
The Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, has called for institutional reforms and attitudinal change as the best way to propel the developemnt of the country.
He said there was a the need for a cultural revolution that woud instil positive mindset and patriotism in the citizens. "We need to create the kind of cultural environment that will make room for natives to be involved in finding local solutions to local problems without looking up to someone somewhere to define our development policies," he said.
He made the observations at the 4th annual Ghana Culture Day celebration in Accra last Monday, which was on the theme, "Ghana Culture on the Move: the Economic Impact of Arts and Culture on National Development."
It was organisd by the Ghana Culture Forum in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts (MTCCA) and attended by people from all walks of life, including representatives from the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), MTCCA and the creative industries.
There was display of fashion, literary works, art works, exhibition of indigeneous science and technology and traditional medicine as well as creative architecture.
Rich Cultural Values
Dr. Thompson said it was important to incorporate cultural values into the long-term National Dvelopment Plan (NDP), to produce a generation of people with honest, dedicated and national consciousness.
"As a people, we need to be able to roll out robust industrialisation policies that will make use of local resources. This will create opportunities for the youth," he said.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism and Culture, Mrs. Dzifa Gomashie, said Ghana had a rich culture that ought to be properly tapped to develop the country.
She called for public cultural institutions such as the National Commission on Culture (NCC) and Chieftancy institutions to be adequately resourced to play their roles effectively for national development.
Mrs. Gomashie also said the surest way to promote cultural products and give it competitive urge at the global level was through capacity building.
